January – Foliage Houseplants

Foliage houseplants offer a number of benefits. The main one is that they remove toxins & pollution from the air in your home, making the air you breathe cleaner and healthier.

They also add colour to your home, and have been shown to boost morale and happiness levels.

February – Aucuba

Aucuba are evergreen shrubs with simple variegated leaves. They produce small purple flowers followed by large glossy red fruit once pollinated.

Plant in full sun or partial shade, in a moist but well-drained soil. Aucuba is suitable for most soil types and pH levels.

March – Forsythia

Forsythia are deciduous shrubs with simple leaves and short yellow flowers. At this time of year there is an abundance of these flowers which cover all of the branches and creates a beautifully bright display.

Forsythia are suitable for all soil types and positions in the garden too.

April – Ranunculus

Ranunculus have rose-like blooms and come in a wide range of different colours, from pinks and reds to yellows and apricots. They look truly stunning in borders, pots or flower beds.

Plant in full-sun and dead head regularly to encourage more flowers.

May – Surfinia

Surfinia produce fantastic cascades in hanging baskets and pots. Some come in bold colours, others are whiter but with beautiful coloured veins.

The key to success with Surfinia is regular feeding and regular dead heading to encourage new growth.

June – Argyranthemum

A favourite with springtime gardeners, Argyranthemum produces wonderful daisy-like blooms in many cheerful colours. They are great at attracting butterflies and other pollinators to your garden.

Argyranthemum should be grown in full sun, and are ideal in beds and borders.

July – Cotinus

Cotinus are large deciduous shrubs with simple leaves. Many also flower during the summer, producing small flowers in large plumes.

Cotinus are suitable for most positions and soil types which makes it a great all-rounder in any garden.

August – Crocosmia

Crocosmia are deciduous perennials with erect, sword-shaped leaves and branched spikes of showy, funnel-shaped flowers in summer.

The flower stems grow up to 1.2m in height, making a great feature in your garden. Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil.

September – Pyracantha

Pyracantha is a pretty shrub with attractive flowers and stunning red, yellow or orange berries in autumn and winter. Ideal for training against a wall or fence, or just as an evergreen hedge.

Plant in sun or partial shade, in any moderately fertile garden soil.

October – Callicarpa

Callicarpa can be evergreen or deciduous shrubs with simple, opposite leaves and tiny  white, pink or purple flowers. The flowers are then followed by small colourful fruits.

Grow in fertile well-drained soil in sun or partial shade for best results and loads of berries.

November – Soft Fruit

Soft fruits such as blueberries, strawberries and rhubarb are so easy to grow. They are a good source of vitamins and fibre, and taste delicious too!

December – Festive Pines

Few plants shout Christmas more than festive pines. The most common is the Norway spruce, but there are many varieties available.

When grown in the garden festive pines look great all year round, but look particularly great when decorated for the festive period.
